Locating items and areas inside the restaurant

We use prepositions of place to describe where something or someone is.

They help us explain the position of one object in relation to another.

For example:

“The waiter is behind the bar.”

“The kitchen is next to the dining area.”

These prepositions are useful when giving directions, describing places, or explaining the layout of a room—like a restaurant!

Mapping the Restaurant

In the grid, draw the restaurant where you currently work (or imagine a restaurant where you would like to work). Include entrance, kitchen, bar, restrooms, dining room, server's station, dish washing area, cash register, etc.

Label each section or area using vocabulary from this unit.

Use prepositions of place to write 5 complete sentences describing where things are in your restaurant drawing.

Example:

  • “The fridge is behind the bar counter.”
  • “The entrance is in front of the kitchen.”
  • “The wine shelf is above the fridge.”

Once you finish, present your drawing to the class in pairs or small groups, using your sentences to describe the layout.
